About Burrup Peninsula

Burrup Peninsula is home to one of Australia's most incredible aboriginal rock art sites. Part of the Dampier Archipelago on the north west coast, the Burrup Peninsula contains the largest concentration of rock art in the world. It's believed there could be up to a million carvings, making it one of the best places to see ancient Indigenous art. Many of the motifs and stone features are believed to be connected to the beliefs and ceremonial practices of Aboriginal tribes. View some of these Aboriginal rock art sites and you're looking back thousands of years. The art work includes carvings of people, animals and birds including designs depicting creatures which have been extinct for about 3,000 years. The Burrup Peninsula is also home to the Northwest Shelf Gas Project and you can see this massive mining operation in action from the Burrup Lookout. You can access the Burrup Peninsular from the town of Dampier. Most of the roads through the area, including Burrup Road, are open to public use. Dampier is a two day drive from Perth, or you can fly to Karratha and then drive for half an hour.
